It was also about a kind of cognitive dissonance that many conservatives seemed to be experiencing. Both publications believed Walker's instincts were correct, although only National Review conceded that he was not necessarily the most stable officer in the military. After Walker had resigned his commission and was free to speak to conservative gatherings around the country, a number of groups chose Walker as their raison d'tre, sponsored an address, and pushed his cause in their publications. The shock waves from the Walker affair eventually reached many Americans and inspired some to articulate what they had been questioning for some time. Walker was decorated with the Silver Star, the Bronze Star with cluster, and the Legion of Merit for his outstanding combat record. In actual numbers, however, conservatives defended Walker far more frequently than liberals attacked his tactics; conservatives never missed a chance to call for investigations or to remind their colleagues that to relieve an officer of his command without a full inquiry into the allegations was dictatorial. After serving as the commander of a Special Service Force composed of Americans and Canadians that fought at Anzio, Rome, and southern France, Walker continued to climb the army career ladder and received promotions without interruption.
