Andrew Peterson: At the expense of what couldve been a good story! Just like the orphaned farmboy in Belgariad, to live a lonely life like Drizzt, always caught between two worlds like Tanis Half-Elven. The first is that when I was a kid, it was pulp fantasy, like when I was in junior high I talked my dad, who is a pastor, into letting me read this series called the Dragonlance Chronicles, which were an offshoot of Dungeons & Dragons, which was the most evil thing you could read back then. Or, I suppose you could say, there is running away but the home ran away together. Whereas in Tolkien, in The Shire, you actually get the sense that this is a real place. Hes just this vain person whose decline could be guessed from his earliest days. Anyway, I remember hearing someone, Pullman I think, say that you have to kill the parents. If you think about how in many stories, kids stories, the kids are orphans. They name their houses like people here name boats. I really need that ending. That ending scene stands as the first time I cried while reading. Wingfeather War On the day of the Dragon Day Festival in Glipwood, Nugget (Leeli's dog) ran away. I bear the Makers image, and one of the ways that plays out is that I delight in making. Janner and his family hope to find refuge in the last safe place in the world: the Green Hollowsa land of warriors feared even by Fangs of Dang. It begs questions that can only be resolved in Christ. But for me, I would say that I wasnt reading the classics, I didnt have anything close to a classical education, but the Bible was always there. Andrew Peterson: I mostly hated it. The first book was first published in 2008 and in 2020 all the books were re-released in a special edition hardcover. Hes an even better poet. I actually (*ahem*) read ahead by accident (it's a bad habit) and found out that Janner died, but even knowing beforehand didn't prepare me for it. Janner, Kalmar, and Leeli are ready and willing to fight alongside the Hollowsfolk. He had lain in wait for the perfect moment to spring: the perfect song at the perfect hour of the day, the contrition of my hungry heart, the intricate staging of the beauty that had led me to that dewy lawn, and his holy, brooding spirit draped over the valley like a mist. They are in your cinemas and streaming services. Andrew Peterson: I have been feeling that, but then when I think about it in terms of eucatastrophe, I get this glimmer of hope, and I go, Oh man, the author of the story has this amazing ending in mind. And whether or not we see it in our generation, or it happens later, we trust that the author of the story is good. @zoe-wingfeather @anne-of-lothlorien @christi-eaton *bursts through the door* dID I HEAR THE WINGFEATHER SAGAAAAAAAAAAAAAA If you have not read the whole series, you may want to save this until you have finished it. Should We? I remember just letting my imagination run wild, and thinking up Gnag the Nameless as a funny kind of name for a villain but you cant stop there; you have to figure out why hes named Gnag the Nameless, and so, I have these documents that I was writing before I started book one, where it was kind of like an archeological dig, trying to figure out why somebody would be named Gnag the Nameless, and why would he want to destroy the world. I want to start by asking about some of the stories that were contributing to the leaf mould for you, as you were writing and coming up with characters and the plot line. Janner is alone and lost in the hills; Leeli is fighting the Fangs from the rooftops of the city; and Kalmar, who carries a terrible secret, is on a course for the Deeps of . Or Be Eaten, The Monster in the Hollows, and The Warden and the Wolf King.The series chronicles the adventures and transformations of a family . And so I missed the glory of what those books really were, for many years. *quietly sneaks in* I love these books, I actually wrote a book review on them, its around here somewhere on the website, if you havent checked it out, please do. The writer of the Wingfeather Saga is not a recovering fantasy nerd, he is a redeemed fantasy nerd. After helping free Janner, she was put in the coffin again. So this goes back to something I heard someone say probably 10 or 12 years ago. Theres none of that artificial bickering, I dont think. Andrew Peterson: Hes basically a George MacDonald scholar. And so, Im not going to get into it, because it will get dark and Ill overshare, but the point is, I think shame is a way of allowing the enemy to name you, as opposed to clinging with all your hope to this other name that God gives you. I really didnt like the abrupt ending, though. But on one condition, Janner has to keep a watchful eye over his brother, Tink, and sister, Leeli. During the Wingfeather War, Janner was taken to the Fork Factory, and he likely would have not escaped without the help of Sara. Since the publication of the series opener, On the Edge of the Dark Sea of Darkness in 2008, the Wingfeather books have followed the adventures of the Igiby siblings -Janner, Kalmar, and Leeli . And so it kind of makes the parents look like knuckleheads. I actually like some of his movies a lot, but it was just too much whatever. Janner tells himself he is just looking out for Tink but he enjoys every bit of the adventure. One of the most frustrating moves that I see in stories is when the kids are trying to tell the parents, Hey, theres this crazy thing happening, and the parents arent listening, they arent paying attention. The Wingfeather Saga. I love these books as much as I love LOTR. Summary. Janner sighed and looked back at her with a heavy sadness. They tell stories of the Maker. So gratifying to hear you both discussing Tolkien and Lewis in relation to Wingfeather I had intuited a lot of this influence but this took me a lot deeper. Its funny to me, but I get emails and comments from people that are like, Hey, so Im just curious, you have a barber in the town named J. Bird, is that a Jayber Crow reference? But I would say Harry Potter was another thing that kind of kick-started it, because those books were coming out as I was working on the Wingfeather books, and at the time, if you were a Harry Potter fan, you had this deep suspicion (that was really a deep hope) that she was going where it felt like she was going with the story, which was really a Christian story, whether or not shes a Christian herself. Andrew Peterson: Thats whats great about Breaking Bad, right? *sighs* I can't convince myself it's not the most serious thing in the world. MY NAME IS CHILD OF GOD AND I AM LOVED., I definitely picked up on that allegory as well, @inkling-for-christ. So with new hardback editions of books three and four releasing last week, I thought now was a good time to talk to the author of the series, Andrew Peterson, about the books. At first I tried to keep up, tried to preview every book they read. Thanks! Andrew Peterson: Well, there are two answers to that question. Free shipping for many products! So that was part of what I was going for. And just like the Discworld novels, the footnotes in Wingfeather resent being footnotes. That was what I was hungry for. The maker told kal hed know. How I wish I could tell you more but there isnt enough space and Im only a footnote. I just realized your tag!!!!! Even when it seems Leeli raughable, really laughable, to do so. If hes got matches, does that mean there are cannons in this world? And so I had to figure out what kind of world it was, so that it felt to the kids like they were dealing with a real place, with real human beings, who they could know and love. But I never did Dungeons & Dragons. Jake Meador: Well and even after Gnag is gone, theres Fangs that are like, We dont know what were supposed to do now., Jake Meador: Weve just been evil for so long, and, Jake Meador: When I was reading that to Davy Joy my wife was in the kitchen and overheard the part where one of the one Fangs is like, What if we like being evil?. Truth-telling with a capital T. I recommend Wingfeather because of what it reveals of God and his ways. If we meet any Fangs, I want you women to be safe. When we come home from the library, each of them has five or ten books under each arm. Does that make sense? The Wingfeather Saga LOTR con - Freeform When the great villains of each world come back, and unite in power to have dominion over all of the worlds, the heroes must unite as well. When Im watching Marvel movies, and the cities are getting blown up, Im always like, Who cleans this up? Im always just kind of like, My goodness, all the work that they put into that building, and its just rubble now. But the point is I read any story that felt like it would take me out of where I was, and allowed me to explore some other place. In the same way God told Jesus what he had to do. T.H.A.G.S. I think thats the difference between Narnia and Tolkien is that earthiness of The Lord of the Rings. Andrew Peterson: Christopher Nolan movie. Eventually, they were ready and locked Mobrik and the Overseer in the coffins. Where is it!!!!!! Andrew Peterson: Man, can I just thank you for caring about the stories and reading them? Fork Factory Janner was captured by an old lady and taken to the Fork Factory, the place where children were forced to make weapons and armor for the Fangs. The Fangs arent that way, because the Fangs have mostly given up their humanity. If divinity is mentioned, the gods are more like Greek, Roman, Norse, or Egyptian gods: Gods who worship their stomachs. Or Be Eaten when Janner was finally separated from Kalmar, the parents were gone, and Janner was in Dugtown alone. Do you like ancient and over-looked treasures? Even Podo." As I hope I did today. Water from the Small Creek. Hes got to figure this thing out. Another influence for me as I was writing is that I think one of my most persistent spiritual struggles is my imagination. I was so enchanted by the story, the characters, the fights, the jokes, the challengesI feel so much like Janner. Also, may I just say that Andrew Petersons music is better than Wingfeather, go ahead, disagree, but its just my thought. I mean, he has to. Arriving back at the ruins of Castle Rysen, the family again gave thanks to the Maker for restoring Janner. Janner Igiby is a 12 year old boy who wants to sail the world. All right, well, this has been fun, so thank you so much for-. Suddenly it matters when a spaceship blows up. It actually reminded me of a thing I read by Russ Moore years ago though, where he talked about parents talking with their kids when theyre scared at night, or when theyre worried about monsters or something. And then when the new ones came out, not the Disney sequels but the prequels, the space battles were much more impressive, more amazing than the ones in the original trilogy, but it didnt work because nobody cared about who was flying the spaceship. At one point Janner strikes a match, and a friend of mine was like, Matches require gunpowder, basically. Janner comes back, right? Andrew Peterson: It was just a spaceship flying around, with these cardboard characters in them. And since Mr. Andrew Peterson *Throws a very, very, annoyed look in his direction* is not going to tell us if Janner Igiby Wingfeather lives or not (I believe he does. Were over halfway through the fourth book, and Im already dreading the ending, which I will not be able to get through without coming unglued. Jake Meador: But that brings up another interesting thing about that last bookwhat do you do with all these fangs that have totally lost their identities after Gnag is gone? No way. The hope that Janner had revived Sara, and sparked a revolution as she was determined to lead a rebellion that would escape the factory. Do you want the next best thing after the Lord of the Rings and the Chronicles of Narnia? So could you talk about how you tried to explain them, first to yourself, and then as youre writing the story? The tree house swayed and creaked in its perch, and the smell of stew filled their noses. Janner had to be the one. Every month, I review Faithlifes Free Book of the Month and while waiting for the next free book, I pick a book that tickles my fancy. She also befriended Janner. I wish he had finished it in a more final way. Often the parents and the grownups in general are oblivious. But at no point did I care about the characters.
